For Hans Fischer, craftsmanship does not mean perfection; it is not about "mastering" something. He literally works "with" his material.
"In arts and crafts, I can breathe life into things through working with my hands."
His spontaneous, seemingly made with childlike excess or even displeasure tableware pays little attention to any kind of norms. With it, he explores the boundaries of convention.
Born in Lower Bavaria, Hans Fischer completed his pottery apprenticeship with Jörg von Manz. This was followed by years of collaboration in potteries in Germany and southern Italy. Since 1983, he has worked in a shared studio with his wife Maria Fischer.
His engagement with the tradition of peasant pottery is unmistakable. He is one of the very few who research the folk art of German arts and crafts. Through his work, he imparts knowledge about materials, their peculiarities, suitability, and properties, helping to keep these alive.
"In arts and crafts, the gift lies in becoming aware of one's own person. And everything personal goes against the current."
Hans Fischer produces glazed ceramic tableware—thrown on the potter's wheel and decorated with graphic drawings. He also works as a sculptor on free-standing clay sculptures. His pieces are personal statements, perspectives, and views of the world, made accessible and available.
He is present at numerous exhibitions at home and abroad as well as in selected shops. We are very pleased to represent Hans Fischer exclusively in Vienna.
